About our Service Group

This group is filled with 6 passionate and open minded learners who will be the key to our new and improved future. Breaking Barriers is a group with a clear goal which is to break down any gender stereotypes within our ISD community. After brainstorming we have come to the conclusion that primary kids are our target audience. Equality in education is an important issue, as gender equality guidelines is to improve education for both girls and boys. Our goal is to provide activities that don’t neglect or suppress the opposite gender. By placing girls and boys at the same level will relatively increase the value of women and will also benefit boys by informing them of the strengths, capabilities and contributions of members of the opposite sex. In order to achieve this goal we have decided to to break down the root stereotypes such as boys are more athletic while girls are more artistic. In this community alone we have noticed that parents don't involve their girl child in sports while parents with a boy do not involve them in artistic activities as much. Breaking Barriers has decided to create a CCP/tournament that will involve both girls and boys to play soccer together from the grades 4 and 5. This will alternate one day it will be playing soccer while the other day is doing more artistic things.

THE NEED WE HAVE IDENTIFIED: The need to create equality amongst genders throughout the school, to help students engage more in classes and be more involved in social and everyday life.

HOW WE CAME TO THIS OBSERVATION: We talked to the kids in order to know what they thought about our idea. We went as a group and started to interview them based on mixed group sports. The results from the interview was that pretty much all of them are open to the idea of mixed activities. Some of them were a little bit more hesitant about the idea.

LONG TERM GOALS: Coming together with different communities to break down gender stereotypes and accepting each other for who we are.
